In this article I'm going to explore some of the more popular smallmouth bass lures on the market. There are so many choices available when it comes to fishing lures that choosing the best option can be a challenge to say the least. The smallmouth bass lures listed in this article will make choosing which lure to try easier.
Are any of these fishing lures the be all and end all when it comes to smallmouth bass lures? Of course not but having a few (if not all) of them at your disposal will most certainly make you a more effective angler. Smallmouth lures are basically smaller versions of largemouth bass lures, so if you're familiar with largemouth bass lures many of these lures will be familiar to you.
- Crayfish Imitations - Crayfish are a favorite food for smallmouth bass, and where these little buggers are prevalent, crayfish can make up 2/3 of the bass's diet. Crayfish imitations come in many varieties from crank baits to soft plastics. Some of the most effective crayfish imitations are made by Berkley. The Berkley Chigger Craw is a very effective smallmouth bass lure. Berkley's Gulp and Power products are as effective as live bait in many fishing situations.
- Top Water Lures - Top water lures are very effective for smallmouth bass as well. When used in the early morning top water lures can be as fun and effective as it gets. The key to using these lures effectively is to have flat water. What you're looking for is water that looks like glass. This is when these lures are the most effective. Some of the more popular top water lures would be: Tiny Torpedoes, Heddon's Zara Spook Puppy, and the floating Rat-L-Trap.
- Crank Baits - Crank baits are basically minnow and shad imitations. These baits are made to look like baitfish. These baits can be very effective fore smallmouth bass, especially when they mimic the bait fish normally found in the water that you're fishing. When it comes to smallmouth bass lures one of the most realistic and effective I've ever come across is the KickTail minnow. Some other popular crank baits would include: Rat-L-Trap Mini, Bomber Model "A" crank bait, and the Rapala. Crank baits are very effective when fishing for these bronze beauties.
- Soft Plastics - Soft plastics either slipped on a jig head or fished "Carolina" style are very effective smallmouth bass lures. As I alluded to earlier the soft plastics market has been revolutionized by Berkley. Their Gulp and Power products are exactly like soft plastics, but have been impregnated with fish attracting scents. The Berkley Gulp and Power products can be more effective than live bait in many fishing situations. The bottom line is that soft plastics are easily one of the best smallmouth lures on the market today.
