For me the medium action is the all round rod and reel. I can catch almost anything besides heavy catfish and muskie.The light can catch trout except for the 8lb+ ,bullheads,suckers, and panfish
Quite possibly because of the way they are made. (Most) of today's graphite rods are made by wrapping carbon fibers around a mandrel, then a "hoop" - either fiberglass or graphite is wound inside the blank. It is then pressure cured with epoxy resins. The smaller diameter the blank, the more labor intensive and precise it has to be.
